Tempered Glass Replacement in Los Angeles Code-Approved Safety Glass for Doors, Showers and Windows
Broken tempered glass has to be replaced with a new tempered pane made to size, since tempered glass can’t be cut after it’s made. Angi puts tempered window glass at $200 to $600 and sliding window or door glass at $150 to $900. Why Did Your Tempered Glass Shatter?
Tempered glass, also called toughened glass, starts as regular annealed float glass. Fast heating and cooling makes it four to five times stronger than annealed glass, per Vitro, but a break anywhere releases all that stored stress at once.
01
Can Tempered Glass Break on Its Own With No Warning?
Yes, but it’s rare. Glassmaker Vitro says a tiny nickel sulfide stone, as small as 0.003 of an inch, can sit inside the pane and grow with heat changes until the glass shatters. Edge or surface damage from handling and install is the more common cause.
02
Why Did Your Glass Crumble Into Thousands of Small Pieces?
That’s how tempered glass is built to fail: small, blunt cubes instead of jagged shards, which Humboldt County’s building code guide says lowers the risk of injury. Laminated glass works another way: a PVB interlayer holds the cracked glass in place.
03
Can a Small Chip on the Edge Cause the Whole Pane to Break?
Yes. A chip from a slammed door, a bent frame or a thrown rock weakens the edge. The pane can hold for months, then break when the sun heats it or someone bumps it.
What’s Included in Our Tempered Glass Replacement Service?
Every job covers measuring, glass built to size, cleanup, setting and sealing the new pane and haul-away. For regular window glass, see our window glass replacement page.
01
Can You Replace Just the Glass in a Door or Sliding Door?
Yes. In most sliding patio doors and French doors, contractors pull the panel, swap the tempered pane or dual-pane unit (IGU) and set it back on its rollers. Worn rollers get fixed on the same visit through our window track repair service.
02
Do You Replace Tempered Glass in Shower Doors?
Yes. Shower doors and tub enclosures must use safety glass by code. Contractors replace framed and frameless shower door glass and match the old panel’s thickness, clear or frosted finish and hinge cutouts.
03
Can You Swap Old Regular Glass for Tempered Glass?
Yes. The CPSC’s federal glazing standard, 16 CFR 1201, has covered glass in doors and shower enclosures since 1977, but older LA homes can still have regular glass in sidelites, low picture windows or beside tubs and pools. A tempered glass window replacement brings those panes up to today’s code.
How Much Does Tempered Glass Replacement Cost in Los Angeles?
Size, thickness, dual-pane units, low-E coatings and obscure or frosted privacy finishes move the price up.
| Job | Cost |
|---|---|
| Tempered window glass | $200 to $600 (Angi) |
| Sliding window or door glass | $150 to $900 (Angi) |
| Sliding door glass only | $250 to $1,000 (NerdWallet) |
| New sliding glass door | $2,564 average (Angi, via NerdWallet) |
How Much Does It Cost to Replace Sliding Door Glass?
NerdWallet puts glass-only sliding door work at $250 to $1,000. Tall dual-pane low-E panels sit at the top of that range.
Why Does Tempered Glass Cost More Than Regular Glass?
It takes an extra furnace and cooling step, and every hole, notch and edge has to be cut first. So each pane is made to order for your opening.
Glass Only or a New Door: Which Makes Sense After Tempered Glass Breaks?
Replace just the glass when the frame is straight, the door slides well and the lock works. At $250 to $1,000 against a $2,564 average for a new door, glass wins. Foggy rather than broken? See our foggy window repair page.
Pick a new door when the frame is bent, the track is worn through or it’s old single-pane aluminum. For worn sliders, see our sliding window replacement page.
How Can You Tell If Your Glass Is Tempered?
Look in the corners for a permanent mark etched, sandblasted or fired into the glass. The California Residential Code requires this mark, called the bug, on safety glass in hazardous spots, naming the maker and a standard such as ANSI Z97.1 or CPSC 16 CFR 1201. No mark? Try these checks:
- Polarized sunglasses. Tempered glass shows dark stripes or spots in daylight.
- Edges. Tempered edges are smooth and rounded.
- How it broke. Small cubes mean tempered. Long shards mean regular glass.

How Is Tempered Glass Measured, Ordered and Installed?
- Measure. Size, thickness, finish, holes and notches.
- Quote. You get a written price for each pane.
- Secure. Contractors clear shattered glass and cover the opening.
- Order. Glass is cut and drilled, then tempered.
- Install. Set on setting blocks, sealed and tested.
- Clean up. Old glass hauled away.
What Should LA Homeowners Know About Safety Glass Rules?
Section R324.4 of the current California Residential Code (R308.4 in older editions) lists “hazardous locations” that need safety glass. Heat-strengthened glass doesn’t qualify there, per Vitro.
01
Do Bathroom and Stairway Windows Need Tempered Glass?
Bathroom glass needs it when the bottom edge sits less than 60 inches above the standing surface and within 60 inches of the tub or shower. Stairway glass needs it when the bottom edge is less than 36 inches above the stairs or landing. Glass in doors, and glass within 24 inches of a door with a bottom edge under 60 inches, needs it too.
02
Do California Landlords Have to Upgrade Old Glass to Tempered?
Not for intact glass. California Civil Code 1941.1 requires rentals to have “unbroken windows and doors,” so a broken pane has to be fixed. When a landlord replaces glass in a hazardous spot, the new pane has to meet today’s safety glass rules.
03
Will Regular Glass in the Wrong Spot Fail a Home Inspection?
A home inspection is a report, not a pass or fail. Many inspectors check for the safety mark in doors and near tubs and stairs, and buyers can use a missing mark to ask for a fix before closing.
Why Do LA Homeowners Choose PaneRight LA for Safety Glass?
- Glass first. Contractors replace the pane before they suggest a new door.
- Code-marked glass. Every pane carries a permanent safety mark.
- Opening secured. A shattered pane gets covered on the first visit.
- Price per pane. Written before any work starts.
- Warranty in writing. Ask for a written labor warranty on top of the manufacturer’s warranty.
Where Do Contractors Replace Tempered Glass in Los Angeles?
Contractors fix broken tempered glass window and door panes in the San Fernando Valley, Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, Altadena, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, the South Bay and Long Beach. That covers ranch homes in Northridge with original patio sliders and hillside homes off Mulholland Drive with glass railings. Rebuilds in Altadena and the Palisades need tempered glass under state wildfire rules, and contractors replace storefront door glass for businesses on Ventura Boulevard.

Tempered Glass FAQs
Can Tempered Glass Be Cut or Drilled After It’s Made?
No. Cutting or drilling it shatters the whole pane, so every cut and hole is made before tempering.
How Long Does It Take to Get Replacement Tempered Glass?
Contractors cover the opening in the meantime through our emergency window repair service.
Can You Replace Tempered Glass Yourself?
You’d still order a pane to size from a glass shop. Small framed panes are a fair DIY job, but heavy patio door panels chip easily at the edge, and a chipped edge can break later.
Is It Safe to Tape a Shattered Pane Until It’s Replaced?
Yes, short term. Wear gloves and eye protection and cover both sides with wide packing tape or clear film. Shattered tempered glass can drop out all at once, so keep kids and pets away and don’t slide the door.
Can New Tempered Glass Break Again?
Yes, but most breaks have a cause: edge chips, a bent frame or worn rollers that let the panel hit the frame. Contractors check all three on every job.
