When Is the Best Time to Replace Windows in Los Angeles? A Month by Month Plan

Most advice on the best time to replace windows is written for places with snow, where installers race the first freeze. Los Angeles doesn’t freeze, so the calendar that matters here is rain, heat and Santa Ana winds. Use the weather numbers and planning steps below to pick your install month, then count backward to the day you need to call.

What’s the Best Time of Year to Replace Windows in LA?

For most LA homes, the best plan is to get quotes in January or February and have the windows installed in March, April or May. The rain is tapering off by then, and the new glass is in before the Valley’s worst heat.

That’s the best month, not the only one. A retrofit window fits inside the old frame and goes in within a day or two, so it can go in during almost any week of the year. Full-frame work is the job to schedule around the weather, because the wall stays open around each window until the stucco is patched.

How Does LA Weather Change Window Timing?

Downtown LA averages 14.25 inches of rain a season, and 11.64 of those inches fall from December through March, based on the 1991 to 2020 normals (Los Angeles Almanac). June through September adds up to less than a quarter inch.

MonthsDowntown rain (normal)What’s happeningWindow timing
December to March11.64 inchesStorms, leaks around old frames, Santa Ana peak in Dec and JanRetrofits go ahead; full-frame jobs work around storm days
April and May1.01 inchesMild days, May Gray on the coastThe best install window of the year
June to September0.24 inchesValley heat, AC running all afternoonDry and easy to schedule, but you pay for the old glass on every bill
October and November1.36 inchesSanta Ana winds, fire season, first stormsLast call to get windows in before winter rain

Heat shows up very differently across the county. Downtown’s normal August mean is 74.7°F, but the average August high at Pierce College in Woodland Hills is 97.4°F, according to NOAA. On a west-facing wall in Reseda, Encino or Burbank, single-pane glass costs more in July than it does in April.

Santa Ana winds can blow any time from September to May, and they peak in December and January (Britannica). Those are the days old aluminum sliders rattle and let grit through the gaps.

What Should You Expect in Each Season?

01

Winter (December to February): Best Time to Shop

Winter is when drafts and drips make it easy to see which windows are failing. Walk the house after a storm and note every wet sill and fogged pane before you call for quotes.

January is a good month to get two or three quotes and place the order for a spring install. Ask the contractor to set full-frame installs on dry-forecast days.

02

Spring (March to May): Best Time to Install

Spring installs land between the last big storms and the first heat wave. If your home is in a Pasadena landmark district, a Long Beach historic district or a condo with an HOA, start in winter, because design approval comes before the permit.

03

Summer (June to September): Fine for Installs, Hard on Bills

Rain almost never interrupts a summer job. The catch is that you run the AC against old glass while your custom windows are being built, so a July quote can mean an August or September install.

04

Fall (October and November): Beat the Rain

Fall is the last chance to fix leaking frames before December storms. Hillside homes in fire hazard zones in the Palisades, Altadena and the Santa Monica Mountains should also plan glass upgrades before Santa Ana season. See our fall window prep guide for the checklist.

How Far Ahead Should You Plan?

Work backward from the month you want the windows in. Each step below has to finish before the next can start.

  1. Quote and measurement. One visit per contractor, with a written, itemized quote.
  2. Approvals. HOA sign-off, or a Certificate of Appropriateness in historic districts, comes first.
  3. Permit. Same-size swaps in the City of LA can be issued online. Size changes go through plan check. See window replacement permits in Los Angeles.
  4. Build time. Custom windows take a few weeks to make after the order is placed.
  5. Install and inspection. A retrofit install takes one or two days for most houses, then a final inspection.

For a spring install, that means calling in January or February. Fire rebuilds in the Palisades and Altadena face longer waits, which our new construction windows page covers.

Is There a Cheapest Time of Year to Replace Windows?

We haven’t found LA price records that show window prices dropping in a set month. Manufacturer promotions come and go, and they’re not tied to one season here.

What you control is time. Shopping a few months ahead gives you room to compare quotes line by line instead of signing the first one.

Does the Federal Tax Credit Change When You Should Buy?

Not anymore. The IRS says the federal home improvement credit for energy upgrades, Section 25C, covers improvements made through December 31, 2025 (IRS). Windows installed in 2026 don’t qualify, so there’s no year-end deadline to chase.

Local utility rebates still pay. LADWP’s window rebate requires a finaled permit, so budget time for the inspection. See the rebate answer on our homepage for the current programs.

When Shouldn’t You Wait for the Right Season?

Some window problems can’t wait for spring:

  1. Broken glass or a break-in. Call for emergency window repair the same day.
  2. A bedroom window that won’t open. It’s your fire exit, so see window won’t open or close.
  3. Water inside the wall. Stains under a sill after a storm mean water is getting past the frame, and rot spreads with every rain.
  4. A window that won’t lock. Get it fixed now, not when the season suits you.

Best Time to Replace Windows: FAQs

Can Windows Be Installed in Winter in Los Angeles?

Yes. Downtown’s normal December mean temperature is 57.8°F, so cold isn’t what stops an install here. Contractors plan around storm days.

Is It Better to Replace Windows Before Summer or Before Winter?

Before summer, if heat and AC bills are your main problem, which is the case for most Valley, Burbank and Pasadena homes. Before winter, if you have leaks, rot or rattling sliders on a windy hillside.

How Long Do You Wait Between Ordering and Installing?

A few weeks for custom windows, plus permit time. Size changes, historic districts and HOA reviews add more, so start earlier if any of those apply.
